Forth Presents “Drawing on Glass” with Dominic Fondé

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on September 25, 2008 by forthgallery

“Drawing on glass” is an opportunity to learn the craft of glass engraving with a well-respected and Internationally renowned glass artist in a hands on, informative and interactive teaching and training situation.

by Dominic Fondé

Glass engraving is an art and craft with a long history and tradition. It encompasses a number of different and diverse techniques and unlike other hot glass and kiln glassmaking techniques. Art glassmaking is a huge field with many different techniques, some requiring expensive, very specialized materials and equipment and many hours of dedicated tuition and practice.

Glass engraving needs little specialized equipment to get started and students will be able to learn the skill required quickly so they can create their own engraved glass artwork.

This workshop will focus on drill engraving, one of the most accessible styles of glass engraving.

Drill engraving; this technique involves the use of a small hand held drill engraver* which carves lines into the surface of the glass, literally scratching the surface of the glass. These lines can be as subtle as a  pencil sketch or as bold as a graphic artwork created with thick tipped marker pen.

Through a mix of discussion and hands on demonstrations students will be made familiar with the engraving drills, diamond burrs and how to handle engraving on flat.

Topics such as drawing, shading, lettering and pattern making will be addressed. Whether you are a first timer wanting to learn the basics or an amateur engraver wishing to gain more experience this course is for you!
